We feel that it is better to keep your natural teeth if at all possible; extraction should always be the last resort.

If your tooth has developed an infection you want it sorted out as quickly and permanently as possible; that is the purpose of root canal treatment.

When the pulp at the centre of the tooth (the root canal) becomes infected, the infection may spread, eventually forming an abscess, which can be acutely painful.  If root canal treatment is not done, the infection may return and you will need to have the tooth removed.  In these cases some people may still prefer to have the tooth removed straight away.

The treatment does not hurt: it’s no worse than having an ordinary filling done, thanks to modern anaesthetics.  It’s a skilled and time-consuming procedure, though, and requires at least two sessions.  At the first, your mouth will be numbed with local anaesthetic, the infected pulp will be removed from your tooth, the root canal is cleaned out and then tidied up ready for filling.  A temporary filling is inserted to give you and your tooth time to recover after the infection and you may be prescribed antibiotics if required.

At the second session your dentist will check that the infection has completely cleared up, and the final permanent filling is put in.  Now that the pulp and nerve have been removed the tooth is dead, this may mean longer term the tooth may become brittle, in these circumstances we may consider additional treatment such as crowning to give it extra strength.

Occasionally a dead tooth will discolour.  In that event, we have a variety of treatments to restore your smile to its usual brilliance.

Should the infection return; we can revisit repeating the procedure, but we may occasionally have to remove the tooth.

Root treatments have a somewhat scary reputation but that’s no longer deserved. At Smile Design we use modern anaesthetics and medication to ensure they are totally painless procedures and we can restore you to full health as quickly as possible.
